[Comm] Caroling around the City

The sights and sounds of Cherubmas festivities filled the air, and it was obvious that the season was in full swing with the height of the holiday rearing. In a way, it was almost a shame to see it gone so soon. A month didn’t feel like nearly enough time. Cherubmas was a delight to all who experienced it, at least that’s the way it seemed. Not to mention, it was a great way to experience the delights of the Cherubuns and their culture. A look into the Heavenly Meadow that Ashes had yet to experience. Primrose was still selective about who he talked to in regard to these things and despite his time at the Embassy, the other bun was still tight-lipped.

Now, however, Primrose seemed more than happy to discuss the ways of the Cherubuns and persuade everyone into his way of thinking.

Maybe that's how Ashes ended up with him walking down the streets, bundled up in scarves and other warm garments to fight against the cold. Primrose had mentioned carolers outside of the Embassy and Ashes had implored him to go with them, heading towards a small platform where carolers performed.

“And this is why it's so important for people to understand, these carols aren't just whimsical little songs. They’re tales of history, relics of our past, things that we need to understand so we can remember and learn.” He glances over at Ashes and eyes the other bun up and down. “Maybe you could learn a thing or two from these carols, ever the curious one sure.”

“That would be nice.” Ashes hummed as a slow tune filled the air. “So, what's this one about?”

Primrose paused and perked an ear as they approached, listening to the song that's being sung before smiling something far more genuine than Ashes had seen in the past before clapping his hands.

“A Virtuous Night!" Primrose proclaimed. “A song about overcoming the hardest of trials and following virtues as they lead you down the path of righteousness. While I understand that most here don't quite understand the concept of these of our virtues, I do think it is imperative to impart that to Cherubuns they hold great significance. They are the physical manifestation of our beliefs and our connection to others both in spirit and even here in Burrowgatory.”

Primrose hummed with a look of displeasure on his face. “I am surprised that some of them linger around as they do. I would never question their tastes but the company some of them have chosen to keep is still…well, anyway.”

“Will you teach me how it goes?” Ashes asked enthusiastically. Primrose, broken out of his train of thought by the question pauses, seemingly running down another thought before nodding. He walks up to one of the carolers once their performance has completed. The quick conversation between the two ends with a smile and nod. The other bun hands over one of the books that they had been holding and Primrose makes his way back.

“Can you read music at all?”

“I can follow along enough for now.” The tune didn't seem to be too hard and Primrose must have agreed. He nods and begins humming a few lines showing the rise and fall, crescendo and notes that seemed to linger on forever. Still, the tune wasn't hard to pick up on. Three repeating verses with the same chorus. It definitely had a different tune entirely than what was normally sung by the buns. But, Ashes found that it wasn't unpleasant in the least.

Soon enough the two were singing side by side, Primrose's corrections lessening before they both fell into a harmonious performance of their own. The other carolers had made their way to a different location, seemingly following their own path but Primrose and Ashes remained, singing their song over and over until the notes were perfect. A few passers-by had smiled and listened temporarily before heading on their way, seemingly with the understanding that this was a practice and not performance but the appreciation was noticed nonetheless.

Once they were finally finished without a single note off-tune Primrose smiled and shut the book. “Well... You did much better than I expected. You're not hopeless after all.”

Ashes just chuckled and nodded, holding onto the book and looking at Primrose with unrepentant glee. “So, I can keep the book?”

Primrose paused and looked around, seemingly trying to find the caroler that he had taken the book from before sighing and nodding. “I suppose they intended to leave it with us so I don't see the harm. Maybe some practice will do you good..."

“After all, if you are as interested in Cherubun culture as I expect you are, then I want to hear you singing correctly.” Emphasis on the last word wasn't lost and Ashes smiled, nodding at the other.

“Of course!” Anything in the pursuit of knowledge.
