Maize Maze
It’s rare to have a day off for someone like Sylas, unlike June who’s on call constantly but has inconsistent working days. But today happens to be one of the days where they both have a day off, and June happened to stay the night before.
Sylas doesn’t think much of when they started to wake in the same bed. At some point it just happened when the two of them found each other.
But it’s a fine day and he thinks today’s a good day to head out. From the looks of it, there’s a Farmer’s Market that’s open today that they could head to. He knows that June is dying to make pie again and this is the best opportunity to get some ingredients.
“Hey,” he prompts in a way that will get June to wake up. “Aren’t you bored?”
June blinks a few times as he finally wakes up. “If it means finding trouble then I’ll decline.”
“It’s the farmer’s market actually,” he replies instead. “Maybe we’ll run into your friend there.”
(Sylas may call Jean Jacket a friend but by all accounts that's debatable. He wishes he was June’s littermate instead of the greed bun.)
“It does sound like some place they would frequent.”
“And you can finally make that pie you keep on talking about.”
–--
Getting to the market actually doesn’t take that much time for the two of them and before Sylas knows it, they’re there at the market with a bunch of buns and dolls running around. Though he does take note of how there’s a corn maze.
(There is no Jean Jacket in sight. Good.)
He likes to think that he knows June enough to know that they’ll somehow end up there.
And he’s right in every way as June practically carries him over to the entrance.
“We can get the pie ingredients later but I think we can clear this in record time,” June announces.
“Right, because we won’t get lost while trying to get out.”
“I think we’ll be fine. If need be, I’ll just carry you so you can see over the corn.”
He can’t say he’s surprised as they enter the maze. It takes a few turns before it hits him that well, this feels awfully like a giant creature eating buns whole. The two of them happen to be next yet June doesn’t seem bothered at all.
“If there’s some corn, well, maybe we could take some home,” June rambles, mischievous. “Might make for a good dinner.”
“And here I thought you wanted to make pie.”
“There’s always time for pie, but that’s for later.”
–--
A few minutes later, Sylas quickly realizes that they’re lost. Very lost. The kicker is how everywhere he looks is simply corn.
There is corn everywhere as far as the eye can see.
“I think we’re lost,” he points out rather unhelpfully.
June simply looks defeated but he’s always been too stubborn to give up. “We’ll figure this out.”
A beat.
“June I’m pretty sure you can’t follow the left wall to get out of this.”
“We could just walk through the maze, Sylas.”
“You love property damage.”
Considering June’s occupation as a stuntman, it’s not too out there that he has no problems breaking things. Sylas has seen his stunts involving falling down stairs or lighting himself on fire. Really, the corn field should be nothing too out there.
“Still, it’s our best bet,” June points out. “Even though everything looks the same.”
“We hardly know which direction to go in though,” Sylas replies. “We’ll end up going in circles at this rate.”
He’s assuming that they’re not going in circles in the first place already.
“Though I think we could have taken the turn to the left before we ended up here,” June remarks. Except well, now there’s another bun here with them.
They’re not the only ones lost here.
It’s Silver. In all of Silver’s glory who is just as lost as they are.
“Oh,” Silver says as he spots them. “I didn’t expect to see you two here.”
June grins. “And I thought you had a better sense of direction than we do.”
The envy bun sighs. “Not when everything looks the same.”
“That’s a corn maze for you.”
Sylas wonders if coming here was a mistake rather than having to deal with this.
“But I’m still wondering if this is training for you, y’know, just like how I have to practice stunts or else someone’s going to get hurt.”
Silver shrugs. “And you’d be able to hold your own in a fight if you applied yourself more.”
Ah, June mentioned Silver’s self defense lessons that he considered taking. They must have gotten in contact then.
“We can talk more about my lesson with you after we get out of here.”
“If we get out of here,” Sylas points out rather unhelpfully. “I think we’re lost.”
Silver sighs a bit in defeat as if he’s been stuck here in hours. “Everyone’s getting lost.”
A beat.
“So how long have you been stuck here, Silver?” June cuts in, far too giddy.
Silver only glares.
It’s going to be a long day assuming they can get out of here in the first place, Sylas concludes.
