Lyra's punk era?
Trends and fashion meant a lot to Lyra. Being a makeup creator and artist, she always tried to stay on top of the latest trends in her circles so she would better know what to make and sell. She’d gotten comfortable with soft pastels and natural hues. Lyra didn’t even realize she was limiting herself by sticking to what was familiar. Until the day she met Jackal.
It was a complete chance meeting at the Rabbit Hole, and Jackal seemed like she was less than thrilled to be around someone as bright and girly as Lyra. She made a lame excuse to Hops and dropped the carats for her drink on the bartop. She was out the door before Lyra could even ask for her name. But Lyra was already entranced with her style, it was so unique and she had all sorts of questions she wanted to ask her.
“Hey, Hops,” she started, still staring at the door after Jackal even though she’d long since left. “Who was that?”
“Oh? Her?” Hops put a hand on her hip and shook her head. “That’s Jackal, normally she barely comes into town. Just to drink or sometimes shop. She’ll do an odd job here or there sometimes. But she’s got this cool girl, lone wolf thing going for her. Usually she doesn’t like to be around someone unless she likes their vibe. Don’t take it too personally, darling, you two are just on the opposite ends of the spectrum.”
Lyra bristled at Hops’ innocent statement and narrowed her eyes. “Well I want to know more about her, and I can dress punk, thank you very much. So I guess I know what I’ll be shopping for tomorrow.” Lyra never responded well when she was told she couldn’t do something. Instead it just lit a fire under her and made her want to do it more.
She stayed for a drink and some conversation with the other patrons, but she went home earlier than she normally would. Lyra wanted to get an early start tomorrow.
The next morning, instead of dressing in her typical cute frills, Lyra started to dig through her closet. She didn’t own much clothing that could be considered alternative or cool, but she could throw something together. Even if it meant ripping up a pair of black tights she had. She slipped into a black miniskirt and a pair of chunky black heels before she found a red crop top to throw on top. She looked at herself in the mirror and folded her arms under her chest. Was this enough?
Lyra decided it wasn’t and moved to her desk to start working on a few new samples of makeup instead that she was intending to give Jackal for free. She kept things in a dark color palette using mostly black, dark green, and blue. In the end, Lyra had a new eye shadow palette and a liner that she hoped Jackal would like. Now for the hardest part, actually finding the other bun.
Lyra wandered through the streets of Burrowgatory, just hoping that she might come across the envy bun out on errands or maybe an odd job. Even though she was on a mission, she couldn’t help but stop and chat with a few buns she came across on her walk. A few of them asked about her style while others talked to her about her makeup lines. She let them know that she was open for custom orders, but that they’d have to stop by her home another day for business. After a long day of meeting and chatting and walking, she still hadn’t managed to find Jackal. Feeling a bit defeated, Lyra made her way to the Rabbit Hole to drown her sorrows and talk with Hops about her day.
She entered the bar and closed the door behind her with a soft sigh. She leaned her back against it for a moment before she heard a voice coming from the counter.
“Whoa,” a voice she hardly recognized said. When she opened her eyes she realized Jackal was looking right at her. “Well you look different today,” the other bun continued. “What’s with the change?”
“Oh! Well…” Lyra moved a little further into the bar and Jackal patted the seat next to her, inviting her to sit down. Lyra smiled and walked over to her, sitting down next to the bun she’d been looking for all day long. “Well,” Lyra continued, “I was hoping to get a chance to talk to you. I wanted to ask you so many questions about your style and, oh.”
Lyra reached down into her purse and pulled out the cosmetics she’d prepared. “I made these this morning, I wanted to ask about the colors. If you like them you can take them home!”
Jackal raised a brow, obviously amused by this display just to get her attention. But when she looked down at the eyeshadow, she had to admit she was impressed. “Wow presents just for me? Afraid I don’t have anything to give you in return. Except…” She moved to pull her bracelets off before she clasped them over the bands on Lyra’s ears. “There, now every part of your look matches.”
Lyra couldn’t help the bright, cute smile on her face and, even though she wasn’t as cool as Jackal, they spent the night together drinking and talking about punk fashion.
Lyra tries to be cool but ultimately she's a cutesy girlfail.
