Annalise and their sister April were raised as infants by Gremory, but Annalise sprouted curled pride horns rather than branching envy horns. Why? She and April were some of Gremory’s favorite buns, shining and sparkling their way through childhood by learning various tricks and engaging in the arts. All the while, they were blissfully unaware of their fellow littermate’s neglect by their caretaker’s hand. Annalise spent her days honing her crafts and having pride in her work, showing off her skills to other buns who would be enchanted by her shimmer. Annalise had a picturesque childhood, and they were deposited to the Church of Sulfur as an adult without a worry in the world.

She had barely made her way out of the Church before a littermate of hers verbally accosted her, asking her why she hadn’t helped, why she hadn’t done anything to show Gremory the others. Annalise had no idea what the bun was talking about, and promptly returned back to the Church, shaken. It took some time for an understanding, with Annalise rarely leaving the care of Mercy and Oleander. After the hazebloom harvest had revealed the envy buns to the wider populace, Annalise went through a sort of reeducation period. They examined how their childhood had negatively impacted others (and how they had seen the consequences from that firsthand), and came to the conclusion that harming another living thing, was wrong. This idea took hold of her mind and she vowed to never harm another bun, as her immense guilt for not acting when she was a child would follow her like a ghost.

Annalise became an absolute pushover then, letting others take advantage of them because they felt they deserve it for being complicit. In her mind, her ignorance was no excuse, and standing idly by actively hurt others. This completely overhauled Annalise’s personality, to the point where other buns find her kind of pathetic for how “nice” and “kind” she is, always thinking of others and never thinking of herself. Mercy and Oleander became increasingly concerned about her, never giving into her vice or sinning, nor following the demon’s testaments. Every time they tried to get Annalise to branch out and find comfort in sin, she rejected their ideals. Frustrated with her, Mercy and Oleander not-so-gently encouraged her to leave the comfort and safety of the Church to venture out and spread her wings.

Unfortunately, Annalise didn’t have much time to let that happen. Nearly immediately after venturing down some back alley in the entertainment district, Annalise was assaulted by a group of shady buns for her presumed wealth in a robbery gone awry. However, rather than defend themself, Annalise literally laid there and took her beating, not lashing out once outside of calling for help. She whimpered as the buns ripped one of her wings off, merely curling into a ball and trying to keep her vitals safe. They closed their eyes, and after a few moments the buns scampered off, frightened away by a doll standing above her. The doll returned back to her bun form and scooped Annalise off, whisking her away to a hospital.

After some time recuperating, Annalise introduces themself to the other bun, who says her name is Mikayla. The two began as unlikely friends, with Mikayla teaching Annalise about survival in Burrowgatory, and also using her artistic skills for her own gains. Over time though, the two formed an unbreakable bond and navigate life as long-term partners. No one who meets them together understands their kinship, but their love for each other is unmistakable.
