Fate

He/Him
Demonslayer/ Fallen Knight
Seeks Out the Heirs of the Demon King he swore an oath to,
so that he may keep his promise to his late beloved and end the cursed royal bloodline.

True Name:  [unknown]

Just Your Friendly Neighborhood Battle Addict | Meddlesome | Wannabe Mysterious Savior | Insert Cheesy Fingergun(s) | Shows Up Out of No Where | Secretive | Sadomasochist | Enraptured Berserker | Extortionist|

Demands pay for his service, whether you asked for help or not. | Immune to most flirty charms, cutesiness, and flattery in the face of 'duty' (or really just getting what he wants). | Whatever chivalry he appears to have is often tainted by his vice and somewhat flippant attitude toward anyone he hasn't made a temporary contract with to serve. | At least somewhat respectful toward his boss. (a.k.a. "My liege.") | May teasingly calls everyone else lords, ladies, lards, etc on occasion. (i.e. "Morning, lady.") | Generally not openly lecherous. | But he has done dumb things to get a hold of sexy pictures, magazines, etc. | Would probably take getting hit as a compliment. You've been warned.

On the surface, Fate wears the facade of a fairly carefree man as he cheerfully swaggers on the fringes of society, claiming he has no real sense of honor left and is just here at the service of the distressed. He needs to eat to live. So he allegedly looks for any excuse possible to insert himself into a situation that may or may not require combat or persuasion of the sword-bearing variety. After which, he attempts to smilingly bully a bit of money out of whoever he happened to 'rescue.' He isn't exactly a proper knight, no. A fact he feigns indifference about. And beneath his smile is a layer of cruelty as, once he has taken sides, he doesn't concern himself with whether or not his target is strong enough to truly defend themself. He'll fight them all the same. That said, while he casually aids whoever he wants at a whim most days.

He takes forming contracts very seriously. He also doesn't contract himself to just anyone, claiming that he prefers lieges who will 'use him wisely.' Those he does offer such service to have usually earned his trust. It's rare that he offers contracts for longer than 1-3 days at a time. But if he continues to return to specific people or offers them longer-term service? It's probably a sign that he's sort of attached to them.

Furthermore, while Fate would have his masters believe that his contract is all about fighting, he takes it seriously enough that he is willing to assist in mundane tasks and simply keep his masters company. He's surprisingly good at a lot of things besides fighting. And he's pretty excited about stuff like casually watching an episode of something and going out for pancakes. As a personal rule, he says, he doesn't have sex with anyone he is contracted to. For professional reasons and all. So chances are, if he starts to work for someone, it's not because he wants to bang them. But he'd be lying if he said he didn't consider it a job perk if his liege happens to be hot.

It's tough for him to permanently bind himself to a new master. After all, he already made his first oath to his king and feels he failed to uphold it. As such, he doesn't believe him taking a new oath would mean much of anything to anyone now. But if he was ever convinced someone could trust and value him so much again, he'd give anything to live up to their expectations. Fate doesn't know it, but he's looking for a second chance.

Beneath his mask, he is something of a lost man who never slowed down long enough to properly grieve. He carries with him a great sense of confusion and personal disgrace for whatever part he played in the destruction of his old home. Battling gives him a sense of purpose, so he clings to his sword desperately. And on days when he is too wounded to fight? He is gloomy. And despite what he believes about himself, he does have some lingering sense of honor in that he keeps his word, refuses to knowingly speak falsehoods, notably goes out of his way to assist some people whether they'll pay him or not, politely waits for his opponents to be ready, and, when left to his own devices? Prefers not to pick fights with people who are already in a weakened state. All bets are off if his target is healthy. But honestly? Fate has a surprisingly gentle hand for tending to the wounded.

This includes after battles, assuming he can still move. Admittedly, he's the relentless type that unless the rules were determined beforehand or he has a companion to reign him in, he'll likely need to be knocked unconscious before he acknowledges that the fight is over. As long as he wasn't trying to kill his opponent, he usually doesn't have any hard feelings about the outcome. Usually... But he does tend harbor lil battle crushes on his rivals, at least until he manages to beat them. (The same happens if people beat him at certain board games and his latest discovery- video games.) Fate's way of expressing his crush ranges from the standard '*casually showing up to challenge you to rematches at any hour- no matter how inconvenient*' thing to *'affectionately pesteringly you to give him a mission or something helpful to do for you.'* In most cases, he is not thinking too seriously. Just likes getting his crush's attention.

Toggle Spoiler

- Fate's favorite weapon and specialty is his large sword. But he is also proficient with other bladed weapons and some unarmed combat.

- His eyes are dark blue.

- Fate assumed his current name a secret identity, as he doesn't wish to remember too much by having people call him by his true name.

- He is unofficially roommates with Yaroch, who also happens to be his friendly rival, despite much to Yaroch's protests. They live Yaroch's very nice apartment in Mothlight Bounds. Yaroch mostly tolerates Fate staying at his place from time to time in hopes it helps keep Fate out of trouble. Fate kinda sorta behaves so long as he is inside Yaroch's house, because Yaroch reminds him of an old friend.

- Yaroch sometimes pushes Fate to attempt to work normal day jobs sometimes, which... Fate is mildly horrified by the thought of. He is good at making coffee, to the point that Yaroch jokes Fate could make an alternate living as a barista.

- He lost the lower half of his left arm during his early training days when he fought a little too recklessly and provoked his first demon swordmaster. To Fate, it was a harsh lesson in humility. He was at risk of being callously dismissed by his liege. Ever determined to live up to expectations, however, Fate worked very hard to adapt; to live; to continue to fight. His second swordmaster, a similarly abled warrior, taught him well. Now, Fate has a different center of gravity, trains to maintain flexibility, and occasionally deals with phantom limb pains. He makes use of his mouth, legs, feet, and shoulder/neck grooves. Some things simply take him longer to do than others, and once-in-a-while he is frustrated by the fact. But he is otherwise self-sufficient. He has gotten used to the weirdness of some people either staring at him or consciously looking away. And he is aware of prosthetics, but is generally more comfortable performing without them.

- Fate's greed horns manifested as a result of his desire for strength. Because Ever since he was little, he was inspired by the demon knights who served the Demon King Tethvron. Fate was initially gifted to a noble demon relative of the king who mistook Fate for sort of cute baby bunny pet at first, because they had never seen a succubuns before. As Fate grew, they allowed the weakling to try his luck as a squire, for which is immensely grateful.

HISTORY

Fate had a courtly love with the Demon King Tethvron's 17th and newest consort, a demon sorceress named Ndiress, who came from an allied territory. Jealous of the favor Ndiress showed a mere succubun, the King Tethvron sent Fate away on what was intended to be a lethal but pointless mission to slay an old rival and retrieve an allegedly stolen royal heirloom. This angered the sorceress greatly. She had been sent as part of a conspiracy to assassinate the king, but she had delayed her plans out of love for Fate. Now that she believed him dead, she moved forward in retaliation and summoned calamity from right under the king's feet.

A short but bloody war ensued as the kingdom's army struggled to slay the sorceress and her summoned soldiers. When Fate learned of the warring, he rushed back to the kingdom, thinking he would defend his liege and lady love against whatever enemies assailed them. He battled through the chaos to make his way to the heart of the kingdom. Unfortunately, by the time he arrived, he found the castle in ruins, his king and companions dead, and the hopelessly wounded sorceress heaving on a broken throne. Battleworn and confused, Fate slew the remaining guards and summoned soldiers, ending the conflict. He would never understand the full story of what transpired. And when his twisted lover bade him to grant her final wish, he could not refuse. There had, after all, been records of an endless cycle of tragedy fueled by the royal family for ages, well before his time. So he needed little convincing that whatever had happened, it was the royal bloodline to blame. He also believed Ndiress when she said ending the bloodline might allow him to see those he cherished again someday.

And so, after staying with his beloved until her dying breath, he set out on what he believed would be his final quest. He did not know how many heirs his lustful liege had sired. But if slaying every last one of them meant Fate would gain closure, he was prepared to dedicate himself to the carnage. He had always enjoyed the thrill of battle on some level, and now had the perfect excuse to lose himself in it. The demon sorceress' boon guided his blade so that he could track down those who were marked, no matter how far they wandered across the hells. Things grew a tad complicated, however, when he began meeting heirs who weren't exactly pure-blooded demons. In fact, these indirect royal descendent were succubuns like him, who were merely adopted into the demon nobility. Yet they were marked by his sword all the same. Uncertain what this could mean, Fate opted to save the first few succubun nobles he met for last. Except ever since then, that list has been began growing. At some point, Fate began to doubt whether there really would be an end.

Fate has slain a few succubuns, but he mainly focuses his energy on demon heirs. His search has required him to spend more time in the Burrowgatory, and as a result, he has slowly begun to form attachments again. At times, he is torn between continuing to blindly chase his mission or letting the past go and living in the moment. But ultimately, a knight must learn the truth of the cursed bloodline and really see things through to the end. He secretly fears he will someday be led to kill one of his new companions. When that time comes, will he have the strength to keep his promise?
