Year of the Bun

Everything is dark as Dan looks upwards. That's not unusual, in Burrowgatory.

A small pinprick of light appears. Then another. Slowly, the sky becomes dotted with little glowing sparks. Dan groggily assumes they must be embers from fireworks that have caught on stalactites, or perhaps some sort of unusual bioluminescent phenomenon... And then, another light appears in the very center of the sky. Large, round, and shining brilliantly among the stars. Dan's heart skips as his recollection stirs.

Suddenly, rather than looking up at the stars, he is among them. He drifts through the sky in a strange, dreamy way, barely able to comprehend the majesty of the heavens that surround him. His eyes begin to a water a little as he's overwhelmed by the beauty and nostalgia, transported right back to when he was a young bun under Kashi's tutelage. He swears he sees a flash of a smile, strange horns and ears that don't look like they belong to any kind of succubun he's seen before—but when he turns, all he sees is the moon, as round and white as a mochi.

Dan laughs a little in awe as he soars through the sky, picking up speed and grace. The moon shifts through its phases as the stars spin through the sky, and Dan knows that this beauty is always happening far above him, every month, every year, even if he cannot see it.

There's another white, round shape, and Dan startles, thinking for a moment that a second moon has somehow appeared. However, as he draws closer, he sees a familiar criss-cross of vivid red across the white. Shibani smiles at Dan. They say nothing as they join hands, turning to take in the glory of the night sky together.

Back at Dan's shop, everything is quiet. The Mochi Moon altar remains untouched—save for one daifuku mochi, now missing from the trio that was carefully arranged in the center of the display.

Dan holds Shibani tightly, still curled up in the pile of pillows. In his sleep, he smiles.

Happy New Year, Everybun!
