Dango 101 - Too tired to make dango~

DANGO 101

Dan's Dango / Afternoon

“No, no, that’s not how you do it!” Dan yells out. 

Sepia had recently decided to pick up dango making along with drink making in order to take care of their newfound imps. She hoped that with Dan looking for an apprentice, that she could get the chance to learn. However….

“Sigh- you’ll never be able to properly craft dango if you hit it so weakly!” They point at Sepia’s well… mushy creation. “You must put vigor, and effort into crafting dango!”

Sepia hadn’t expected this to be so haaard~! Why can’t they just, like, purchase some rice flour and add water or something???? She’s giving it her all but her arms already feel like the poor mochi staring back at her. Any more and they’ll just fall right off!!!!

Still, even with this being so hard, they really want to get some proper treats for their imps; Soda and Popcorn. They know Hutch is quite insistent that they don’t need any food, but seeing all the other Succubuns with their various colorful imps has started to make her feel like she needs to step up on her imp care. They also probably shouldn’t just be eating her food either (Aha, that’s on her though, they seem to find her through food after all!)

“Hey, pay attention!” Dan snaps, suddenly catching Sepia’s attention. “You’re going to start over, until you can get this right!”

Oh no. They’ll be doing this forever at this rate!!! Why did they even sign up for this???? Is it really worth it for some imp treats?????

“Watch my movements ok? You need to pound the rice flour like this.” Dan starts pounding away at their sample of rice flour as a demonstration. The consistent movements are already making the beginnings of dango. Sepia continues to watch on, slightly disheartened by how many times Dan has had to show her. “Adding in your ingredients, in this case, we’re adding black sesame…” Seeing everything come together so well, Sepia cannot help but look on in what now has become wonder and awe.

“See? Now try it again!” He lays out the ingredients once more for Sepia. However, this time around, Dan helps Sepia understand the strength needed by supporting her first strike. ‘Hit it like this ok? And don’t let up!”

… Some Time Later…

Sepia did a little better this time, but their noodly arms caved in on them near the end. Dan looks on still quite disappointed. They deflate a little from how much Sepia has failed to retain the information and muscle memory needed to craft dango. However…

Sepia sighs in defeat, and begins to head out before Dan stops her. “Wait-” they say rather flatly. A slight chill running up Sepia’s back. “You’re not cut out for proper dango making, but if you continue to practice for yourself, with your own ingredients, you might be able to get it someday.”

Hearing this, Sepia brightens up a little. Usually other buns tend to not bother when Sepia ends up being a disappointment, but hearing Dan say this… she feels like today wasn’t a complete failure. “Take these with you, and try it at an appropriate place.” Handing them some rice flour, a stick, his recipe book… and the Black Sesame Dango made from Dan’s demonstration!

“You can feed one of your imps the dango made today, that way the ingredients we used isn’t wasted.” He nods, waiting for Sepia to properly exit his shop.

Sepia looks back and thanks Dan by bowing, as her hands are quite full with her new found goodies. As she begins to run off, Dan shouts out “If you need more of those ingredients, you have to work for them! Do some errands and you might have your hands on more ingredients!”

And with that, Dan closes the door to his shop, and begins to clean up for the day. This bun may not have worked out, but if he can spread his passion of dango making onto others, he’s bound to find the ideal apprentice soon!
