A night walk

Yet another strange death listed in the news. How in the world was any bun supposed to get any peace these days. Or well, nights as is the case. Elvira shoved the paper aside with a grimace and looked up at her clock. It was already past the curfew she had set for herself, but she had a date of sorts to make her way to. Absently she reached out and gave her imp a pat on the head.

“What am I gonna do Blossom?” She couldn’t very well leave the other bun hanging, and she didn’t particularly want to call and cancel either. This was going to be her first time visiting their home instead of just meeting out somewhere.

“Sticking to the main streets would be safe enough wouldn’t it?” Pulling herself up she made her way over to the window and peeked out. Frowning at the severe lack of buns out and about. Whatever happened to how lively it was just a week ago? The festivities had been in full swing and now a bun needed neon lights and sharp objects and whistles to get anywhere safely?

Then again, perhaps it wouldn’t actually be that bad. Maybe if she donned her old clothes she would make a less tasty target for whatever debauchery was going on lately. The thought almost made Elvira giggle.

“Perhaps I should bring something with me anyway, just in case.”She turned back and looked at Blossom who was gently swaying as she tried to find a comfy spot to rest on her own little bed. Blossom didn’t seem to have a care in the world. Elvira wondered how nice it must be to be an imp. Hardly anything going on right now seemed to affect the imps. Well, aside from the ones that would need to be rehomed after losing their companions.

Elvira walked over to her closet, pulling out her old leather riding jacket. If nothing else at least it was sturdy and could offer some small amount of protection. It may not be stab proof, but at least a stray slash wouldn’t be too much trouble. Digging deeper into the old box of things tucked in the back she stared at her options.

Did she still have enough strength behind her to consider the brass knuckles that were sitting there? Probably not. She had been out and away from all that noise for years, though she still knew she could fight well if push came to shove. Pushing them aside she lifted away some patches and found her small blade. It hung on a chain and could be hidden easily under her shirt. It was easy to grab the handle, and the large circle in the handle meant it would be harder to drop since she could slip a finger inside and make a fist around it.

The blade was simple, nice and thin, easy to hide, the handle was comfortable in her palm despite that, and the blade itself was a pointed triangle, sharp on both sides. The whole thing was about five inches long from end to end. The ‘sheath’ for it was attached to the chain, though there was also a clip if she wanted it on her belt instead, or to hide it in a pocket. It was a much better option as a safety precaution.

“Who would have thought these would come in handy again for more than just a costume party?” She hummed quietly to herself as she fetched her purse and got ready to head out. Rearranging her hair into a long braid to keep it out of the way just in case, she pulled her leather jacket in tight.

Taking one last peek at Blossom to make sure the imp was resting, she slipped on her shoes and headed out the door, making absolutely sure it was locked. She checked the window on the door to look behind her, nothing was showing in the reflection so she was off on her way.

Keeping her pace quick she stuck to as many well lit areas as she could as she made her way along, keeping in clear view of shop windows that still had an open sign. Every once in a while she would hear a bun tsk at her pace, or perhaps that she was out at all. At least once she caught herself clutching the blade hanging from her neck as another doll bumped into her.

Thankfully most of her trip passed without any incident aside from a few bumps from partiers, or a hand that attempted to slap her rear because she was mistaken for another of the guests pooling out of a bar. Nothing worse which she was grateful for. As she rounded the very last corner she needed however she sighed with relief. A deep exhale that startled her really, she didn’t realise just how tense she was until her friends door opened and those arms came around her. Apparently Elvira even looked shaken up despite nothing happening.

“I’m glad you could make it. But look at you. Why didn’t you just say you’d rather stay in?”

Elvira offered a weak smile, a small shrug, and gently pulled away as they headed in. “And miss getting to come see you? Absolutely not. Besides, nothing of note actually happened, it was a very quiet night aside from the parties.”
