Glass Globes
Milk was someone that could be considered liable to bad decisions. At least, when it came to money... and a few other things, but those were stories for other days. On this particular day, she had been advised by her friends to not go to the Toy Fair alone. When asked why, their response was a simple, "Because we want to go too!" In reality, they were concered that she might make unnecessary purchases. While she had a lot money and nothing to spend it on, that didn't mean they were going to just let her toss it into the void of capitalism. So with that little white lie in mind, she'd spent the better part of her afternoon simply wandering around. That was how she ended up walking right into the fair by complete accident.
No, really. It was an accident. One even her friends would say only she was capable of.
She'd meant to turn right back around and leave— after all who would want to disappoint their friends? But at that very moment, something shiny caught her eye. And just like that, she was done for. The stall owners didn't have to try that hard to convince her. Rather, they practically didn't have to try at all. A pretty color or an exaggerated claim was enough to bring out her purse. Did she actually want these items? Later reflection would say no. But it all seemed like a good idea in the moment. A collection of bits and baubles, one crudely made doll here, one glorified paperweight there. Eventually she bought the first bag she saw just to carry it all. Only when it was beginning to feel a bit heavy did she stop to consider leaving. A few sellers tried to wave her over as she traversed the crowd, but finally the model had some sense to turn them all down. But then she saw it.
Partway to the exit was a stall she'd somehow missed on her first walk through. Just how was beyond her, considering the way her eyes sparkled on sight. Adorning their display was a collection of intricately made snowglobes. Each one was different and the seller would confirm that they were all one of a kind. Dancing ballerinas, a mailman delivering love letters, foxes curled up beaneath a tree. She wanted them all. But her bag was at its limit. At best she could fit only one, but what a hard decision that was! In the midst of her deliberation, the seller spoke up.
"Actually, Miss, I think you might like this one."
Though hesitant to tear her gaze away, she turned around only to immediately gasp. On the counter sat the most beautiful snow globe Milk had ever seen. Its base was a dark blue with painted gold accents, decorated with clouds, constellations, and a few tiny rabbits. The scenery inside was that of a small rabbit catching stars. And just when she thought it couldn't get any better, the seller lifted the globe and turned a gear. Suddenly, a beautiful melody began to play. Her eyes widened as she moved to pick it up herself. How could something be so beautiful? So charming? So...
"I'll take it."
So perfect.
