2 Birds 1 Treat
The cage that sat in the corner of the living room creaked on its hinges. It's steel exterior was sturdy, but being a free hanging cage came with some drawbacks. In this case, the Imps that inhabited it. While Mori and Fear were light and inconsequential, Valtiel was a good bit bigger and heavier than both of them. While most Gargowl of its kind were still and unmoving, Valtiel loved to perch at different spots throughout the apartment. This would lead to an eventual re-entry of its cage, to which it hits its perch with the force of a train. The loud groan of the cage as it sway to and fro for a few seconds was unsettling to say the least.
Irvyll had gotten tired of it. Thus, the eventual decision to replace the old steel hanging birdcage for a more modern table top variant. Thankfully, Hutch had just what he needed for the switch, along with some tips on how to train Imps like those to change their nesting habits. Some involved treats or toys for the Imps to play with while inside, but knowing that Mori spent most of its time singing out beautiful birdsong and Fear was well set in its shell for most of the day. The real issue was Valtiel. Both Valtiel and Mori loved the sesame treats that Hutch provided, crumbling them into small easy to peck pieces would allow him to call either Imp to his side.
Irvyll held his arms up, the crumbles sitting in his hooves for the taking. He whistled, Mori responded first. It's light fluttery flight pattern wasn't indicating any rush to get to the treat, but all the while Valtiel stared down Irvyll from inside the cage. Unmoving, and unflinching, it held its gaze on him like a western gunslinger in a showdown. To the untrained eyes, it would almost seem like Valtiel wasn't interested in the treat by not moving. But Irvyll had watched for hours how it moved and looked just before bolting across the room. The way it clenched its talons around the perch to find its grip, just before the stony feathered segments of its wings flared up and prepared for flight.
Before Mori could get half way to Irvyll, the loud creak of the cage exposed Valtiel. It was too late, the Gargowl moved much faster than one would expect from such a heavy creature. Irvyll had to stop himself from toppling over as he felt two sharp claws land on top of his head. Nestled neatly between his tall horns. Valtiel loomed over him, peering down over his eyes with its own sharp glare. The next thing it did was almost in slow motion, gently pecking into the bits of sesame before raising to an upright stance. Just as Valtiel perked up, Mori landed on his arm. Thankfully he'd had to do little training to them when it came to sharing. The bits of the treat left were poured into the new cage, in which he'd already transferred Fear into.
Mori was more than happy to hop from his arm to the cage. Now was the real challenge. "Can you please try it. I promise it has plenty of space for you." He placed a hoof to Valtiel's underbelly, scritching at the hard plumage. Although usually silent, this trick always made Valtiel emit a low content grumble. It shifted its feet, careful not to hurt the soft flesh atop Irvyll's head. Hopping down into his hands first, before slowly descending down into the cage. He hoped that getting them inside was good enough for now.
Now that the hard part was over. Irvyll was stuck with a new task. Getting rid of that heavy steel cage.
