A Drink to Share

 

There was no such thing as a lull on a night like this. Even though Darla had slipped away from light and laughter with Bell to get a drink, there was still a buzzing about the room, people fluttering about to and fro. Laughter, the sounds of footsteps, and the roar of the crowd above everything else. It was a surprisingly cozy feeling, despite the way bodies occasionally bumped against each other or the way that some sounds were much louder than others like the roar of ocean waves. It wasn't like the heated and overwhelming thrum of a club where sweat and sin consumed above all else. It was nice if she was honest. 

 

While Darla often spent her days in the company of other buns, there was something about being in a crowd like this yet not pressed up against others that felt relaxing, encompassing, warm like a blanket, not fiery like the sun. Even if she wasn't a part of the conversation she was a part of the experience for every bun present that night. She was a fine piece of the background, another gem that shone with the rest among fairy themed lights and glittering gold. She was content with this, happy in fact. Even if no one remembered her years from now, she would know that she was a piece of the puzzle that made their experience more real, more fulfilling. After all, most paintings like this needed a background. 

 

Bell was at ease alongside her. Their night had gone better than either of them had expected, a gentle sort of air had surrounded them. Arms linked together and the gentle press of their bodies together left Darla feeling light and uplifted. With a smile and a pass of a champagne glass, Darla was truly able to feel just how far the two of them had come. After all, not everyone gets to go to a gala as a VIP, a feat that she wouldn't have accomplished on her own. Had it not been for the carnival leader the two of them may never have experienced such an event. Their pension for entertainment and connections made for quite the opportunity to have a chance at such experiences. 

 

Darla's fingers grazed Bell's own, guiding their hand closer and placing a chaste kiss along their wrist, before pulling back and accepting their offer. She giggles as Bell blinked at them in awe. "You can't just do the most romantic shit like that." They said with their voice faltering as they flustered. It wasn't often that the jester was embarrassed and Darla couldn't help but preen at her accomplishment.

 

She chuckled and sipped on her drink, enjoying the bubbles against her tongue, noting it's light flavor wasn't as sweet as she would have liked. Perhaps they could sneak some away later and find some sugar to pour in it like fiends. It was a secret habit that only Bell knew that she partook in and they joined in just as often. They say that the sugar heightens the alcohol's effects but that's not why they do it. For the two of them the sweet taste of the sugar was more than irresistible...speaking of.

 

Darla sipped her glass once again as she looked at her partner, half lidded eyes taking in their form. Every curve and dip, every pattern and ruffle, they were all so enticing. Darla licked her lips, catching the stray remnants of the champaign from her them as her mind began to wonder. Bell hadn't had a sip of their own in the time they stood together, swirling the glass around as a way to keep busy and looking as Darla with thinly veiled excitement. She could only imagine what sort of thoughts were running through their head right now. Whatever they were, Darla couldn't help but take joking sort of offence to them. After all, the jester should only be thinking of one thing and if they weren't well...

 

Darla leaned forward and pushed all other thoughts away with a kiss. A spark of passion settled between them, surprise met hunger, and Darla let her tongue dance across Bells bottom lip, beckoning them to open. After all, Bell needed to have a taste of the champagne as well.
