Rainy Day Blues
Through the slightest rip in the circus tent’s fabric, Topsy stared out at the downpour of rain outside with a heavy sign. When the weather was so uncertain, not a single bun dared to visit and that meant he had a long day of no performances.
A break was always welcome, but not during the kind of days where restlessness was at an all time high. Topsy never felt settled when it rained, instead he had a cramping in his legs that begged him to run around and practice his flips. Something he was unfortunately not allowed to do, given that someone was away in their rooms sleeping or doing other tasks they usually never had time for.
He was perhaps the only bun in the circus that has no desire to sleep away the rain. Instead he scooted closer to the rip, staring at the hard pitter-patter of the rain. Luckily no water was getting into his sectioned away room, but there was a chill in the air that made hum shiver. He didn’t know why he bothered to tell his ringleader about the hole in his room, it’s not like the other bun had time to worry about such things.
All Topsy would do was bundle himself under a mount of blankets, making sure to pile his jesties on his lap before shutting his bun-made cocoon. With luck, that would keep all of them pretty warm for the night.
If not, he supposed he could always beg for more blankets to warm up with or even sleep on the room of someone else’s room if they were feeling nice enough to let him. It didn’t always pay to be a fan favorite when there were other clowns that wanted to be the favorites.
He sighed, at least the rain was peaceful to look at and even the sound, though a little harsh, was calming to listen to. He didn’t doubt himself that he could fall asleep, but there was also a part of him that desperately wanted to stay awake and fight that urge to shut his eyes.
He only wondered he would nap and have dreams of performing, only to be disappointed when he woke up slightly cold in his room. Although he wouldn’t be so cold if he moved to his bed and stopped perching on one or his chairs to watch the rain through a crack.
Topsy wished the circus tent could have windows, at least tiny one, he would have been content to lay in bed and look through the paneled glass, but no. No he was sitting dangerously far on his chair and using his jesties as little heat packs so he didn’t entirely freeze.
Although he wondered what would happen if he dared to put on his best rain clothes and go off splashing in the puddles. He knew it would have to be freezing out there and he was sure he was just asking to get sick, but it was a tempting thought on such a boring day.
Topsy shook his head, no it was better to just watch the rain. He would be heartbroken to lose out on performances because he got caught with a cold and made to sit out until that sickness went away. He could already hear what his ringleader would say, something about irresponsibly and that Topsy needed to be more conscious about the things he did.
He shook his head, goodness what was he doing? Having all these silly thoughts because of a rainy day, he could just perform today when the rain stops or even the next day if it doesn’t. He didn’t think he was the kind of person to get all melancholy because he was bored.
Topsy stood up, collecting both his blankets and his jesties in his arms. He just needed to sleep the day away, get some much deserved rest from his very packed daily schedule. So what if he was a little bored, rainy days meant relaxing and he was going to do that.
He walked over to his bed and crawled on top, quickly making a nest of blankets to cuddle under as he made a spot for his jesties. It was still cold, but he could forget that when he was under three blankets and had his pets close to him.
He was sure he could go running in mud puddles when the rain stopped, knowing that getting dirty wouldn’t anger his boss and he wouldn’t get sick from it. Or rather he really hoped he wouldn’t get sick from it.
Topsy yawned softly, that would be perfect, but for now he was going to nap and get himself as comfortable as possible. It wasn’t everyday that rain was pouring instead of a light mist, these kinds of days could be very special.
