The Curious Mr. Buttons
It was something that Dakota didn’t think of too often but from time to time he remembers things from his childhood. He had a few items from way back when that he managed to keep along his way returning to Burrowgatory as he grew. One of these was a small plushie he managed to grab and hide in his small arms. It was soft and cuddly and VERY well loved even to these days.
His demon caretaker was a kind soul who kept him from getting into trouble as much, making sure that he didn’t accidentally electrocute himself. These thoughts were very vague and fuzzy, but he cherished the faded memories just like the fabric that held the small plush in his hands together. It was a precious item that he didn’t want to ever lose.
This is where Dakota seemed to get his small obsession with plush toys these days. They always found their way to him, and he had quite a collection living with him. Of course, he found the perfect plush maker that has soft and adorable designs.
“We sure have been through some things together, huh? I am glad I was able to bring you along with me. Thinking back to when I first got you is always a nice memory to look back on.” Dakota said to the tattered little plush in his hands as he brushed a thumb over its head lightly.
It was truly a grand memory.
To tell the story, let’s go back to the time at which it happened. He was a young bun at the time and had been learning about how to take care of things that would help him manage his vice a bit better. This was easier said than done, however, and he would cry if he didn’t get enough rest.
One thing that his caretaker noticed however was that he would settle down with soft items. It was a hard day for him, Dakota recalls, being unable to sleep at all and having to go to store after store to get veggies and creams for the types of dinner that the carer was planning to make.
Dakota’s little tears and loud cries of being tired were starting to wear on the poor demon’s ears as he made his way down the sidewalk with the little bun he was watching over. This was when he remembered that Dakota liked soft and fuzzy things he could cuddle into and hide while sleeping. This brought the pair to a slightly large toy store that the demon had seen earlier, and he walked inside.
There were plushies all over, but they would swamp the poor little sobbing bun and drown him in fluff. That’s when Dakota noticed a dark-colored plush through his tears, reaching his little paw out to it and sniffling a little. It was a dark brownish-grey cat with lots of fur and a cute little bow. The demon raised an eyebrow and got the kitten plush for Dakota to hold for a moment, finding that he enjoyed the little toy and purchased it right away.
“I will be purchasing this for this little bun of mine here, please.” The caretaker said to the worker before returning the toy to Dakota.
He immediately hugged it and hid his face away in its fur.
Time passed by and Dakota grew a bit larger, still young and not able to go back to Burrowgatory yet, but big enough to run around and play in the yard under supervision.
One thing was a constant though…
“Mr. Buttons…~ Always hanging in there one way or the other~” The adult Dakota mumbles as he recalls all of the adventures they would go on together.
One such adventure had led to Mr. Buttons nearly getting lost and how he got a bit more tattered than before. They were running through the grass in the yard and Dakota tripped while dragging the little plush behind him when it got snagged on a branch. This would cause him to fall into a puddle that turned into a small hole. It was dragging him away and before Dakota could follow his caretaker scooped him up and tugged Mr. Buttons out of the small hole.
It was then that Dakota thought he would lose his best friend. His demon caretaker looked a bit worried as he checked the state of the toy. He was ripped a bit, and missing some cotton stuffing with a limb nearly falling off.
It would be a miracle if the pieces didn’t fall away from the poor toy before the chance to fix it. However, the demon had a knack for working with stitching and managed to get the plush back together carefully, patching the holes with some leftover fabric he had lying around.
Dakota was worried about Mr. Buttons and had been asked to wait. His eyes teared up as he thought he wouldn’t get him back. That was when a familiar face popped into his vision.
This was his happiest and saddest memory as he had gotten his best friend back and could live happily ever after with him.
He hugged his worn-out little friend in the present and rested on his bed carefully with happy thoughts in his mind. Slowly he drifted off to sleep with Mr. Buttons in his arms to be cuddled.
In which Dakota is brought back to his memory of his first friend and their life together!
