[Gift] Little Hellions

It was nap time in the nursery and Twinkle was more than ready to settle down. He was curled up under a blanket Murmur made for Twinkle himself, the entire nursery was quiet, and there was a warm breeze blowing in through the windows, making the curtains flutter every so often. It was the perfect summer afternoon to nap…

That is it was, until the silence was broken by a harsh whisper from one of Twinkle’s littermates.

“Psst, psst….pssssssssssssst, Twinkle, hey, are you awake,” Kai called out, prodding Twinkle’s cheek with his paw. Twinkle flailed a little to brush aside Kai’s paw before opening his eyes and looking up at the slightly older bun.

“Yes, I’m awake,” he whispered, trying to be quiet so they wouldn’t get in trouble. “Because you won’t let me sleep!” He accused as he narrowed his eyes. The stars around him twinkled just a little bit brighter when he got upset. But the brightly-patterned bun didn’t seem to care.

Kai grinned down at Twinkle and stood up with his paws on his hips. “Come on, this is no time to sleep!” He said confidently, but he still managed to maintain a whisper, for now. “It’s a warm day outside! It’s time to play! Aaaaaaand….” He cut himself off dramatically, waiting for the pink bun to play along with his plan.

“And…?” Twinkle was too easily won over by Kai’s showmanship. He wanted to know exactly what fun things he could be missing out on if he were asleep.

“And everyone else is asleep, so the playground outside is totally free right now! No older buns to tell us where we can and can’t play! The slide and swings all to ourseeeeelves,” Kai said in a sing-song tone, only making Twinkle more excited.

“Okay! Sure!” Twinkle gasped and covered his mouth with both paws when he realized that he was a little louder than he wanted to be. He hoped he didn’t wake up any of the other buns. “But how do we get outside,” he asked in a whisper once more. But the question only made Kai grin.

“Oh don’t you worry, I have a plan for that,” he said as he glanced over to the open window. Next to it was Murmur’s rocking chair that he used when fussy buns wouldn’t fall asleep. The back was latticed and apparently Kai thought the texture would make it easy enough for them to climb up to the open window. Of course, that plan didn’t exactly have a contingency for getting down from the window sill or back inside the nursery, but children don’t typically think that far ahead anyway.

If it was a good enough plan for Kai, it was good enough for Twinkle! The pair tiptoed through the rows and rows of sleeping buns, careful not to wake anyone else. If they did, they wouldn’t get the completely open playground they were hoping for!

They hopped up onto the seat of the rocking chair together and carefully climbed the latticed back until they made it to the window sill. It was a bright day outside and Twinkle’s shimmering fur sparkled in the light. “So now what,” the pink bun asked his littermate excitedly. Whispering had been completely abandoned now that they were so close to their goal.

Kai grinned and put his hands on his hips proudly before he pointed down below the window. There was a bush just beneath them that seemed plush enough to catch their fall. “Now, my dear Twinkle, we jump!” Before waiting to see if Twinkle was even okay with jumping, Kai jumped down into the shrub. After a moment or two, his voice called back up to the waiting bun.

“Well?? Come on! Jump down and let’s go play!”

Twinkle grinned even wider, unable to help himself. All fear was forgotten as he jumped down into the bush below. Some of the branches snapped and leaves and twigs got caught up in his fur, but soon he and Kai were bounding for the playground. The two didn’t even bother to be quiet as they played, they couldn’t imagine that the other buns could hear them from all the way out here.

Childish laughter chimed in the warm breeze as they slid down slides, swung on swings, and played tag around the yard. Of course, they would be heard eventually. By none other than their caretaker Murmur. The front door to the nursery swung open to reveal a panicked demon when he realized two of the succubuns had managed to sneak out during nap time.

“You two!” He called out when he saw Kai and Twinkle. Twinkle gasped when he heard his loud voice boom across the playground, but Kai didn’t even seem phased. He just laughed louder and grinned at Twinkle.

“C’mon! Let’s lose him!” Kai pushed gently on Twinkle’s back to get him to start running with him and together, they ran around from hiding spot to hiding spot, leading Murmur on a chase that turned into a game for the two of them. They were caught eventually, of course, but it made for a very memorable afternoon.
