Freigns on frosty mornings

“Hey c'mon lads, hold up a minute. At least let me get my stuff on.”
Zepp had a leg on the bench just inside the front door, as he pulled a heavy winter boot onto the raised foot. Morning light trailed through its window, with glints of frost visible on the bottom of the pane. Two freigns, one dark furred, the other with a coat resembling freshly fallen snow, huffed at him, stamping their little cloven hooves on the wooden floor below, impatiently.
All he could do was roll his eyes at the restless creatures. “Hey, if you two keep that up and we won't be going anywhere.” He pulled the shoelaces tight, and began to tie the threads together. Once he set his foot back to the ground, the white one leaned its head against the boot, looking up at him with large, white puppy dog eyes, begging him to hurry up.
“I know Dvalinn, I know, just one more minute man. The snow won't be going anywhere.”
The darker one began banging its antlers against the front door, leaving small scratches in the material.
“Oi, Dáinn, you want to be left here? Or do you want to go out and play in the snow? Up to yourself.”
The little imp whined, and stopped hammering at the door. Once he'd the second boot on, he set up his music, and grabbed his keys. Upon hearing the rattle of metal against metal, the freigns perked up, and began dancing in circles around his feet.
“Okay okay, relax guys. I know you're excited. We've got plenty of time.”
As soon as the door was opened, the pair dashed out, as their owner fumbled to lock the door behind them. Upon the realisation that there was no thick blanket of snow, only a thin layer of frost coating the ground, the imps both gave a whine of disappointment.
“Calm down boys. Too warm here at the minute for heavy snow, you know that. Don't worry, I'm bringing ye up to one of the higher caverns, they'll be plenty there. Now, either of ye want to be carried, or ya going walking?”
Dvalinn immediately began leaping. Dáinn just stepped over to Zepp’s left side.
“Okay mate, up ya come.”
He crouched down, letting the frosty imp jump into his arms, snuggling in until it made itself comfortable. Zepp began to head down the street, towards the path to the cooler cave systems, petting the imp curled up against his chest, the little black one trotting along just beside him.

Just got an idea for a little short story based on how my own pup acts while I get ready to bring him on a walk... Instead featuring two lil deer.
