Snowglobe Day

The holidays were coming up in Burrowgatory and Lyra had absolutely no idea what to get for her girlfriend, Shio. It would be easy enough to make a new dark colored lipstick or a bold eyeshadow for her, but Lyra always gave Shio lipstick. No, this gift needed to be special. Lyra pulled her fluffy ears in closer to her face, letting her hooves comb through her fur as she thought about just what to get. She browsed shelf after shelf until something finally caught her eye. A little glass globe with a wooden base. There was a silver plaque on the bottom that said “A Perfect Winter’s Day.”

And to Lyra’s surprise, when she shook it, glitter and snow came up from the ground before slowly falling down over the scene inside of the globe. A pair of buns sitting by the fire, seemingly happy and content in each other’s company. While she held the snowglobe in her hooves, Lyra closed her eyes and tried to imagine what her perfect winter’s day would look like…

Lyra was busy at home, as usual. The weather was starting to get colder and that meant some of the fashion and makeup trends around Burrowgatory would start changing. She was working on an entirely new line of makeup and had been for most of the morning already. Sketches and color palettes were scattered about her desk while she worked on an eye shadow. She was so absorbed in her work, that she didn’t even hear her front door open. She didn’t pay attention to the sounds of someone walking up her stairs either. She only realized she wasn’t alone when she felt the gentle graze of claws against the front of her chest.

Lyra carefully tilted her head up to see her girlfriend standing over her. Shio was looking back down at her with a cocked brow and a subtle smirk.

“What, too busy to give me a proper hello?” Shio teased as she brought her claws up to trace over Lyra’s shoulder before she moved to comb her claws through Lyra’s soft fur..

Lyra only rolled her eyes before smiling at her fondly. “Take the claws away and maybe I can spare a few minutes for you.”

“Only maybe huh? I don’t think I like those odds.” Shio’s claws moved back down to Lyra’s back, threatening to dig in, but Lyra knew it was an empty threat.

She still did want to tidy up her desk before Shio decided to do more than weakly attempt to scare her. She had ended up with knicks from the other bun more times than she’d like to admit.

“Give me ten minutes to pick up what I was doing, then maybe we can warm up together by the fire,” Lyra teased and couldn’t help but let her eyes wander over Shio.

“Five minutes,” Shio shot back at her. It had Lyra’s eyes rolling again.

“Fine fine, five minutes. Go wait on the couch, I’ll be there soon.”

Shio’s smile spread into a cocky grin, proud of herself that she won Lyra over. She turned away and headed downstairs to wait like Lyra had suggested, satisfied for now.

Lyra started getting all of her sketches and palettes in order before carefully capping off the eyeshadow she had been working on. Cordelia, Lyra’s aureluna imp, woke up from her slumber on the shelf above Lyra’s desk. She began to glow softly as she made her way down to Lyra’s side, nestling herself into her fluffy ears.

“Morning sleepyhead,” she teased as she petted her imp gently. She let Cordelia stay in her fur as she made her way downstairs, purposefully avoiding the living room just for the moment. Instead, she went straight to the kitchen.

Even though the weather had been getting chilly for a while, Lyra had skipped one of her wintertime traditions thus far. She dug around in her cabinets before she set cocoa powder, milk, and sugar on the counter. It didn’t take terribly long to bring together a quick hot cocoa and she even had some peppermint sprinkles to decorate the whipped cream. She grabbed both mugs before she walked into the living room. She was met with a grumpy looking Shio, but Lyra knew she wasn’t really mad with her. Shio could never stay mad at her.

While she’d been busy, at least Shio had gotten a fire started in the fireplace. It set the mood nicely for a warm and cozy afternoon, just the two of them. Cordelia moved from Lyra’s ears to go and curl up in a plush light blue bed. “Lazy,” she called after her imp but, at least she was free to sit down on the couch now. She sidled up to Shio’s side and let one of her fluffy ears drape over Shio’s side. She held out Shio’s mug for her in her hoof and Shio was careful not to catch Lyra with her claws.

“You know,” Shio joked as she took the mug, “hot cocoa wasn’t exactly what I had in mind when I came over.”

Lyra couldn’t help the giggle that Shio drew from her. “Well, I’m sorry to be a boring disappointment. I just thought a cozy winter afternoon with my girlfriend might be nice.” She raised a brow, as if challenging her girlfriend.

Shio’s eyes grew a little softer and she had a gentler smile as she looked at Lyra before taking a sip of her cocoa.

“Mmm,” the other bun said softly. “Well with cocoa this good, I guess I can’t be too disappointed.”

They were too busy enjoying each other’s company to even notice the first snowfall of the year starting to fall outside…

When Lyra opened her eyes again, she was still in the store, holding the snowglobe in her hooves. She blinked as she looked down at it, wondering just how long she’d been imagining herself and Shio inside of this tiny little world. But at least it had given her some good ideas for a present. She put the snowglobe and some hot cocoa ingredients together in her basket before grabbing a few extra cute mugs for the both of them.
