Dango 101
Sugar Cream Pie was a bun born with a sweetness in his veins and the unmistakable desire to learn everything he could about dessert making. Of course he could never have imagined he would find himself learning how to make dango, but it was hard to resist a class where he would learn from someone whose dango were known by every bun in the burrows. You don’t avoid the chance to learn from a master, you embrace it.
“Is this right?” Sugar questioned, his eyes inspecting the dango he was currently working on.
Dan hummed, leaning over to inspect the treat with a quick glance. He took a moment to respond before he bowed his head. “Yes.” Dan exhaled softly, “And you’ve never made dango before?”
Sugar nodded, “I’ve never needed to, I make cakes and pies. It’s never really been my thing to try different desserts when I already know the ones I can make perfect.”
Dan shook his head with a slow shake, “It’s not always about perfection. If you practice, you will get better. You didn’t start off making perfect cakes and pies.” The journey wasn’t something to be skipped over, it took hard work to be able to learn how to bake.
Sugar paused, before laughing under his breath. “I suppose you’re right, how can I get better at something I’ve never tried. Honestly I’m surprised this is going as well as it is.”
Dan nodded, “You know how to bake already, you have some of the skills you need. You just need to continue practicing.”
Sugar looked at his dango, picking up the stick. “I can’t argue that, I’m sure I could make it look even better if I tried. Not to mention, I want to try more exciting flavors.”
“Ube isn’t excitng?”
“Oh don’t get me wrong, it’s delicious, I just think trying crazy flavors would be fun.”
Dan frowned, once again shaking his head, “Careful, if you do too much with a recipe you’ll ruin it.”
Sugar laughed, “True, I’m not an unseasoned baker. I shouldn’t get too excited about wild flavors.”
Sugar still didn’t know what he made of Dan, but he had to admit he was excited to try making more dango and perhaps he would even return with some to share with Dan. He wanted to know he did a good job after all, not to mention getting more tips if he ended up failing.
