Secret Ingredient
Not every sugary sweet bun can bake, and some may even scoff at the idea that their appearance suggested they could bake, but then there were the buns that reveled in such assumptions. Sugar Cream Pie was such a bun, always so proud to show off his horns colored like sugar cookies and his ice cream hairclip he almost never took off. Even since he could remember, he has always loved desserts and found his joy in baking in abundance. He went as far as to seek gluttonous buns to try his creations, taking pleasure in the fact they rarely seemed to be able to stop themselves from eating everything he made.
Even now, after joining the Great Burrowgatory Bake Off, he only cared to see the faces of the judges and that desire to see their pleasure after trying one of his creations. He even wondered to himself if he should have been a pride bun at heart, always needing that moment of praise. Sugar knew he was good at baking, and he wanted everyone in the entire burrow to know. He didn’t need to be the best, he wanted to be own as one of the best. Losing rarely affected him, after all, why would he need to win when he has fans enough to believe he should have won.
However, to prove he could be around the best, he needed the best. He needed perfectly ground sugar and cinnamon to dust a well baked Hoosier pie with cinnamon sugar. While the simple sugar cream pie, of Sugar’s name’s sake, wasn’t anything unique or considered all that special, there was a lot to be gained from perfecting a classic recipe. Anyone could try bizarre and unique flavors, but that did not always mean they would make the best dessert. Those buns were trying for something that might not even work, they were risking the chance to prove themselves for the chance to win.
Sugar laughed to himself as he picked up the cinnamon, he grinded himself and the sugar he painstakingly searched through multiple markets for. No, there was no beating the classics when they were perfect. Desserts should be about tasting good; they shouldn’t be about the bun that chooses the most insane combination of flavors that they thought the judges might like. Maybe it was selfish to consider things so simply, but Sugar never said he was a generous bun.
Suddenly a soft pitter-patter of tiny feet broke his thoughts and his dessert inkap approached him, their cupcake like back swaying as they struggled to drag Sugar a pie pan. He hummed softly and set down his sugar and cinnamon.
Sugar snickered softly, bending down to pick up both his pie tin and his imp. “Careful Sprinkle, it’s not time to bake just yet. I have to make sure I have all my ingredients, not to mention, no pets should be touching any of my food.”
He set the pie tin on his counter and moved to hold Sprinkle high above his head as he did a slow spin. “But I’ll make you and your siblings all the treats you can eat after. It’s so boring only baking for other buns.”
Sugar knew, with his ingredients in hand or rather on the counter, he would make a dessert that would be remembered. This Bake Off was a chance to remind himself that he was just as perfect as his creations. He was a bun that was born for desserts, who knew exactly what he deserved and how to get it. He just needed to compete to show off.
