Circus Sandwich Supreme
The best place to be when you are getting those Breeding Season cravings is definitely a carnival. Such a variety of flavors and all of them delicious…and greasy. Funfetti had just finished escorting the last of the guests out of the fairgrounds, smiling all the way as she waited for them to get in their car and go before she let herself drop. Losing the aggressively big smile, she took a moment to rub her cheeks and groan. After hours of smiling, your face tends to cramp up a bit and boy does it feel good to finally let it go.
The best part of her whole day, though? The leftovers. Carnival and Fair Foods don’t tend to keep over into the next day so anyone who is working to close is allowed to take home anything that’s left at the end of the day. Quick to bound over to the Food Alley, Funfetti had to give thanks about the fact her costume for work had bloomers under it or her coworkers would have gotten quite the show as her skirt jumped and blew in the breeze.
Arriving in record time, she was thrilled to see that they had a bit of a slow day for food sales it seemed and a lot of stuff was still left over. As she walked the rows, peeking at the carts and admiring what was available for the day, she found her hunger being on the back burner. Now she was stuck on what she should even choose. They aren’t limited to what they can take as long as there is some left behind for others to pick something so it was days like this she hated having to make her own choices.
As she pondered, something seemed to click in her brain. A realization of sorts about the fact she didn’t really HAVE to choose if she played her cards right. So, after grabbing a paper plate and a tray from the nearby ‘cafeteria’ (a tent provided for the staff to eat in), she started her plans. First, a solid base was needed so she settled on a soft pretzel, the one with the most salt she could find, pouring some of the provided cheese sauce over it to help her toppings stick to the buttery surface of the fluffy, doughy pretzel.
Next would be the innards, which is where she would probably lose some people (and possibly make them lose their lunch) as she placed a layer of cotton candy directly onto the cheesed up pretzel. Next was a layer of kettle chips and caramel corn. After all, you need a good variety of salty and sweet. That’s something about balancing the palette, right?
Noticing this creation starting to lean a bit, she decided on something more full bodied and firm for the middle to make the rest of the lower middle stuffings stay in place. A piece of pepperoni pizza, cheese side down so she could put some mustard from the corn dog stand onto the bottom of the slice for the next layer of toppings.
People were beginning to stare now as she worked, wondering if she was perhaps already pregnant, probably considering she is making something that could probably kill a bun with one bite and acting as if it was normal. She seemed to pay them no mind, however as she placed 2 corn dogs onto the mustard laden pizza slice. We were luckily nearing the end game as she placed a layer of fried pickles down on top, finishing the monster meal with a funnel cake, powdered sugar included, as the top piece of “bread” on her sandwich.
It was beautiful. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder after all, and we are ignoring the fact that every other beholder is looking at this nearly 10 inch tall “sandwich” as if it may start speaking to them at any moment. Funfetti didn’t care, she practically had stars in her eyes as her stomach growled, happily bouncing toward the cafeteria tent once again so she could dive into this cornucopia of flavor (and probably stomach pain).
Once she arrived,s he settled down at a table alone and stared for a moment. She is… a bit unsure how she should try eating this. After a bit of thought, she decided the best way probably was to pick it up like a sandwich, she was just curious how well it would actually stay together. So, she prepared, picking up some napkins from the table that held their utensils so she could minimize how much grease gets on her hands, but they wouldn’t do much against THAT battle..
Removing her costume gloves and tucking them into her pocket, she finally dove in, putting the thick napkins on either side of the sandwich and lifting. For now, it was actually holding together, so she went in for her first bite. Everyone in the tent held their breath and she swore that there wasn’t a single sound from the Burrows at that moment. Like everyone was waiting to see how it went.
And she purred, oh how loudly she purred as she melted into the flavors that flooded her mouth. Sweet, salty, a bit of sour tang from the mustard and fried pickles she had added, the way the cotton candy melted in her mouth and sort of oozed its overly sweetness into the more bready foods….bliss. It was all pure bliss. She had been waiting all day for food, and though she hadn’t planned for it to be a Dr.Frankenstein amalgamation like this, it was exactly what she needed.
Acrobatics and Clowning takes a lot of energy so eating and staying hydrated is extremely important for her job. So while she didn’t look like it, she could probably eat the circus out of house and home and STILL be hungry. The fact she was able to put away this garbage pile she made is something that is surely going to be a circus legend for the rest of their lives and maybe beyond that.
Those who saw the Circus Sandwich Supreme in person are constantly mixing up the foods that were placed on it, causing many different branches of the story, but Funfetti knows. This sandwich would certainly become a staple of Breeding Season for her. What's more funny, that she managed to eat the whole thing, or the fact that she continued to make it despite how much her stomach hates her for it every year?
